President Mohammadu Buhari has concurred with the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, that Nigeria is “fantastically corrupt” saying that the prime minister was “being honest” when he told Queen Elizabeth II and other British leaders that Nigeria is a “fantastically corrupt” country.
Buhari, who spoke in an interview he granted to CNN’s Christian Amanpour, in London, said Cameron was “talking about what he knows” adding that no one should “fault” the British leader. The interview, which aired Thursday 7pm Nigerian time was monitored in Lagos.
When Amanpour, asked him to react to what Cameron said, President Buhari said: “Well, I think he’s being honest about it”.
“He is talking about what he knows, about the two of us, Afghanistan and Nigeria, and by what we are doing in Nigeria by the day, I don’t think you can fault him. I hope he did not address the press. He said it privately and somehow you got to know it.”
In another interview with t BBC’s Clive Myrie in London, Buhari also stated that Cameron was right; he was“talking about what he knew”.
“If you look at what this government–I mean the government I am heading–we campaigned on citizen security, economy, unemployment and then fight against corruption and what I have uncovered since he came in has proved he was right,” he said
Before the two interviews, the President had responded “Yes” to journalists when asked if Nigeria is a “fantastically corrupt” country as he made his way to the venue of the anti-corruption summit that is currently underway in England.
