Colombian Police on Monday seized six tonnes of cocaine in the northern harbour port city of Barranquilla, the country’s president said.

Juan Santos said in a tweet that the street value of the seized drugs was 200 million euros (214 million dollars).

The drugs were hidden in a load of scrap metal destined for Spain, and could only be retrieved using heavy machinery, a video showed.

Santos said the country’s most powerful crime gang, Gang del Golfo, was responsible for the shipment.

Defence Minister, Luis Villegas, said the drug bust brought cocaine seizures in Colombia this year to 103 tonnes.

That marked an increase in 35 per cent to the same period in 2016, local broadcaster W Radio cited Villegas as saying. (NAN)
