From Lateef Dada, Osogbo
There was commotion in Osogbo, Osun State Thursday, when the officials of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), engaged in a shooting with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The incident caused unrest at the Old Garage Area around 3pm as traders and travellers scampered for safety.
It was gathered that officials of the NDLEA chased a man, believed to be carrying Indian hemp and attempted to escape through the motor park.
Sources said during the chase, four members of the transport union were injured and they engaged the NDLEA personnel in gun duel.
The Chairman of the NURTW, Oyewale Kazeem, confirmed that officials of NDLEA chased some men into the area and their guns hit four members of the transport union.
He said, “the incident, according to the information I received, infuriated members of the NURTW and they engaged the NDLEA personnel.”
However, the National Spokesperson of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, confirmed that four persons were injured and were taken to the hospital.
Babafemi who is the Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA said, “the preliminary report I got was that our men had intelligence that a vehicle was bringing in consignment. They followed the vehicle to a particular garage to see who the consignment would be delivered.
“So at the point, they tracked the vehicle to the garage and confirmed the consignment and arrested the driver of the vehicle, then they raised the alarm and the miscreant in the garage came out with bottles, cutlasses and guns to engage our men and our command was able to contact the state for reinforcement.
“I think four of the miscreant were injured and they have been taken to the hospital,” Babafemi stated.
