•As factions engage in expulsion, suspension war

From Chidi Nnadi, Enugu

Confusion has engulfed the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party’s executives have engaged themselves in expulsion and suspension war.

Already, the state chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye and his deputy, Mr. Adolphus Ude, are  bickering over who is the authentic chairman.

While Ude and some members of the working committee have suspended Nwoye, the embattled chairman and other principal officers in his camp, also expelled Ude last week.

The crisis was to worsen yesterday as Nwoye suspended indefinitely, Mrs Juliet Ibekaku, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Justice Reform.

Nwoye, in the new suspension notice,  said Mrs Ibekaku was suspended alongside 19 others over alleged misconduct and violation of the party’s constitution.

The suspension notice signed by Nwoye read in part: “Notice of Indefinite Suspension for Violation of Article 21 (A) (v) of our party constitution.

“APC national secretariat has been notified of their suspension. The affected individuals have seven days from the date of this notice to appeal their case.

“The affected persons are barred from attending any function organised or sponsored by the All Progressives Congress. Any member of the public dealing with them as members of APC does so at their risk.”

Other members of the party who were suspended alongside Mrs Ibekaku are the Woman Leader, Lolo Queen Ngozi Nwankwo; Youth Leader, Mr Ikechukwu Oloto; Assistant Secretary, Louis Okolo; former financial secretary, Mr. Sydney Eze; former Treasurer, Mr. Ebere Okolo, among others.

But Ude, in a text message circulated to newsmen yesterday said: “The general public is hereby notified to disregard any message from or on behalf of the suspended state chairman of APC Enugu State, Mr. Ben Nwoye and his cohorts claiming to have suspended Juliet Ibekaku and members of the state working committee as he lacks the power to suspend anybody in line with party constitution.”

Disturbed by the confusion and crisis rocking the chapter, Daily Sun gathered that the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyema, has invited the gladiators to an emergency peace meeting in Abuja tomorrow.

Previous meetings held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to resolve the Enugu APC crisis had hit the rocks as Dr Nwoye maintained that the APC constitution does not recognise the office of the SGF and had, therefore, shunned all the parleys.
