Piles are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area. It may also occur inside the body, in the anal canal, or sometimes be felt outside the anus. These ailments comprises of bleeding piles (haemorrhoids), fissures, rectal swelling, prolapse of rectum, peri-anal abscess and fistula.

Obviously, haemorrhoid is distressful condition which causes itching and discomfort around the anal area, and if left unattended, they can become severe, leading to intense pain, bleeding, pus formation and great misery.

Chief Executive Officer of AKO Group of Companies, Mr Obiora Atuchukwu, said the main cause of pile is constipation, which makes one to apply great pressure to relieve himself, while passing stool.

He said this results in damage in the anal wall, thereby causing piles of various types. “They are more common in women during pregnancy and after child-birth. Also, there is evidence that suggests that the condition runs in families.
