I was on my way to somewhere when a five-year-old ran across the road. She was almost hit by a car but the driver was swift in applying the brakes. The girl ran back to the other side of the road she came from and went to her mum. Her mother gave her a hot slap and she began crying.
However, I noticed the little girl’s mother was pregnant; she held onto two other children and had one at her back. No wonder it was easy for the eldest to run to the road, it was obvious their mother was overwhelmed.
I took a closer look and instantly saw the reason she had so many children: she wanted a son. These kids had just a year difference among themselves. I understood the frustration that made her hit the daughter. But I don’t understand why she should kill herself because she wants a boy.
I have heard stories of women going to the mountain to pray and fast for days because they want a particular sex. I think that’s a waste of time really; a child is a child whether a boy or girl.
Unfortunately, I find this kind of thing hard to process. It is different if you don’t have a child at all and you are trying to conceive but when you already have two or more, I really don’t understand why you should be bent on getting a particular sex.
Times are changing and so, I really don’t see why women should be going to the labour room year in year out because they want a male child. I think I need a magic crystal ball to look into their heads just to see what’s going on there. You people should stop overpopulating our country!
It baffles me that some educated people are still reasoning this way too. They want to have a male child and so they keep disturbing their wives to give them one. They don’t bother if she already had a C-section in the past; they don’t care about her health. All they care about is for the baby factory to produce a male child.
Please, I need to ask men who tear their boxers because of male children: didn’t you take Biology classes? Do you remember what X and Y chromosomes are?
Moreover, you don’t need to prove a point to anyone in the society. If you have had two or three children, I think that’s fair enough. The fewer children you have the better for you and your family. Haven’t you noticed lately, why they are no longer inviting your kids to birthday parties? In case you don’t know, it is because of your football team. Throwing a birthday bash is very expensive these days, so bringing in a whole squad to a party will take the slot of three other families.
It takes a lot of emotional strain to take care of one child, how much more when you have so many of them. How will you cope? I can understand that many of our parents did that, but that was when Nigeria was doing well. But not now, bringing so many kids into the present Nigerian situation is not wise. Do you know how much school fees take out of the family budget? It is ridiculously expensive. Give birth to children you can easily care for and give them the best. I would love to go on vacation without thinking it over and over again. Besides, I don’t intend paying school fees for the rest of my life.
The most annoying thing is that it is the poor people who are the main culprits. The rich know better and so they have fewer kids. Take a look at the leaders around the world; check Wikipedia for their family life, you will be surprised at the number of kids these people have. Yet, these are people who control things in the world. They make plans for their lives and don’t bother God about what they should have used their common sense to do. But the poor man will come up with different prayer points and say it is God that gives children and it is God that will take care of them.
Do you want to hear the truth? That’s crap! You earn N50,000 per month and you have five children? How are you going to survive on that? Even if you earn N100,000, how do you intend to live on that? The truth is that you can’t and you don’t need to go and pray about it. Your common sense should be at play and you should know that family planning is the solution.
Yea, you heard me right, you guys should go and do something about these things and stop churning out children like they are going out of fashion.
A young couple made a decision to have just two children during courtship. However, five years after the marriage, they have two boys but now the wife is insisting on having a girl. The man refused bluntly, and he has sworn that if it happens she is going to be the one responsible for the child.
There is another story of a couple, where the husband told everyone who cared to listen that his wife had refused to give him more children. They already had three kids – two girls and a boy, but he wanted another boy. However, the wife knows how much they both earn and because of this she secretly implemented a pregnancy preventing measure by having an implant, when he refused to reason with her. Her husband has called her all kinds of unprintable names because she has a functioning brain and decided to utilize it. Please, explain to me, how do you bring children to the world to make them suffer? Do you live in room-and-parlour place with four kids? Why? You guys should be ashamed of taking your kids through such misery but alas you are not, you still went on to impregnate your wife with the fifth child in that dungeon again.
However, don’t come and ask me one of those Nigerian crappy bland questions such as: “Are you God?”. Oh! I know I’m not God but I also feel I have been divinely called to knock some sense into your head.

Your article is quite apt and on point. It is a balanced evaluation of the subject. I’m a man but I’ve come across many women in my profession (medicine) who have stood out by hard work and dedicated engagement of their brains and not by sleeping around. So, it is a timely warning to these doubters who think all women who make it to the top do so by sleeping. Please cool down your emotions so that you don’t develop hypertension. Bola, your condemnation of men, in general terms, over the claim of a few who hold most women’s ascent to high offices on using what they have to get what they want, is rather sentimental. Many of such men were talking from what they knew. Some women, in connivance with their husbands, go to the level of offering their bodies to bosses of their men, for their promotion. If such a class exists amongst women, why would there not be another class using such a ploy for personal benefits? There was a report on page 5 of Sun Newspaper of September 24, 2017, that some lecturers of a Nigerian university demand sex from students for marks. What would a female graduate of such an educational background do in future to earn political appointments? And with the gamut of corrupt leaders in place, why would people not have such a suspicion?
