Official sponsor of Nigerian National teams, Globacom, has expressed grief on the sudden death of former Coach of Super Eagles and Technical Director of Nigeria Football Federation, Shaibu Amodu.
The company in a press statement in Lagos on Monday described the death of Amodu as unfortunate and sad; especially happening barely three days after the country lost another former coach, Stephen Keshi.
The deaths of the two legends in such a short space of time, Globacom noted, were quite saddening, adding that the sports community and Nigeria as a whole had been robbed of two icons.
Globacom stated that Amodu left indelible footprints on Nigerian football, and that his outstanding contributions to the development of the round leather game in the country would be remembered for a long time.
“Globacom commiserates with his family, the Nigerian Football Federation and the entire Nigeria Football Community on the death of Amodu, and prays that Allah will grant him Aljannah Firdaus”, the statement concluded.
Shaibu Amodu is the only man to have qualified Nigerian national team, Super Eagles, for two World Cup finals, 2002 in Japan-Korea and 2010 in South Africa, without leading them to the competitions.
In 1990, he also led BCC Lions of Gboko to win the now defunct African Cup Winners Cup.
The former coach of BCC Lions of Gboko and El-Kanemi of Maiduguri remains one of the most decorated Coaches in Nigerian FA Cup history. He won the cup in 1989, 1992, 1993 and 1994 when he made it a double by winning the Nigerian League as well.
Amodu Shaibu also coached South African top club side, Orlando Pirates, between 1996 and 1997.
Until his death, he was the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation.
