The congregation of Christian Reformed Church, Nigeria (CRC-N) Taraba State chapter, has directed all its 17 Regional Church Councils in the state to plant at least 1,000 trees each annually to check desert encroachment in the state.

The directive was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its 113th General Church Council meeting and signed by its President, Dr. Caleb Ahima.

The church expressed concern over the indiscriminate falling of trees in Taraba and called for measures to address the problem.

“Despite our series of condemnation on the issue of indiscriminate felling of trees in the state, the act has continued unchecked.

“We once again warn of the effects of this logging, indiscriminate burning of bushes, building on water ways and indiscriminate disposal of wastes, which are on the increase in the state.

“Council therefore resolved to set up a committee to create awareness among traditional rulers and council chairmen in the state on the need to discourage these activities, and to monitor compliance,” it noted.

The communiqué also congratulated church member, Rev. Isaiah Jirapye, on his recent appointment as Chairman, Taraba State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board. (NAN)
