From Kemi Yesufu, Abuja
THE House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to dialogue with Niger Delta militant groups, especially the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
Lawmakers also called on NDA to embrace peace and to stop the destruction of oil installations.
The call was sequel to the adoption of a motion by Ekpenyong Ayi and 29 others.
Ayi led the debate and recalled that incidents of militancy in the Niger Delta between 2006 and 2009 cut Nigeria’s oil production by more than a quarter to around 1.6 million barrels per day.
He further recalled that the hugely negative impact of militancy on the country’s earnings led to the late president Umaru Yar’Adua introducing the Amnesty Programme in 2009 where about 30,000 militants who had destroyed oil facilities for years laid down their arms and embraced the amnesty programme.
