District Head wants national honour confer on DPO

From: Tunde Omolehin, Sokoto

The District Head of Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim, has extolled the selfless service of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Bitrus Gorroh Peny, for renovated a dilapidated police divisional headquarters of the council.

He also called on the Federal government to consider giving the police officer a national merit award for his laudable achievement.

Speaking with journalists in his palace, the district head acknowledged that the police station has been inhabitable for many years with most equipment, including the armoury, were exposed, thus putting the police and the community in danger.

He said Mr. Peny, a Superintendent of police, who was posted to the locality in January, this year, was able to achieve the feat after he mobilised for supports of some stakeholders and influential people within the local government area.

According to him, “This is a praiseworthy development by a DPO who has only come to work here. Although he might be transferred any moment, he chose to do this as if he was an indigene.

“The place was inhabitable but today you can see that he has renovated it and even construction extensions to a standard that officers and men there would be motivated to work at their best.”

He described Officer Peny’s feat as first time in the history of police services in Sokoto state, noting that instead of depending on government for the renovation, the DPO took it upon himself to mobilise people for the renovation of the Divisional Office.

During the commissioning ceremony,  the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mohammed Abdukadir extolled the commitment of the DPO toward improving the standard of security in the state.

The reconstructed station has facilities that include a cell room, offices, toilet and armoury.
