The President of  Nigeria Union, South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, on Sunday  urged Nigerians resident in that country to avoid acts capable of  tarnishing  the nation`s image.

Anyene made the call at the service of songs held for Mr Mike Umelo, the Vice Chairman of the union in  Potchefsroom Ward, North West Province of South Africa.

Umelo,  a 45-year-old businessman and  native of  Orodo in  Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo, died on June 4.

Anyene also urged Nigerians to register with the union as it was the umbrella body of Nigerians resident in South Africa.

“It is important to register as a member of the Nigeria Union because the Nigerian Mission and  the South African government recognise us.

“I also advise that you  join your local Community Police Forum. This will create close relationship with your host, especially in crime fighting,” he said.

The president described Umelo as an active and dedicated member.

“He was an active member and one of the pillars that held the Ward chapter together. The union will continue to support his family. We do not forget our own,” he said.

Pastor Emmanuel Unichi of the Glory Ministry, Potchefsroom, said the deceased was a man of the people.

He urged the people to live a life of  legacy and put their trust in God.

Mr Joseph Igwe, the Chairman of the union in Potchesfroom, said that the vice chairman worked for  the interest of  Nigerians in the city.

“We will miss him and pray God to grant his family the strength to bear this great loss,” he said.
