After many years of controversies, the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU), on Monday, elected new executives to pilot the affairs of the union for the next two years.

Announcing the result of the keenly contested election, the Chairman of the EBSU-ASUU Electoral Committee, Prof. Paul Nwobasi said Dr. Basil Uche Onwe beat his closest rival, Dr. Igidi John, to emerge the new chairman of EBSU-ASUU.

He said Dr. Onwe emerged as the new elected chairman of the union after beating his closest rival Igidi by polling a total of 179 votes as against Igidi who got 80 votes to come distant second.

The Electoral Committee Chairman further said a total of 260 accredited voters voted during the election, adding that only one invalid vote was recorded while a total of 159 valid votes were cast.

At the end, Prof Akande Roland emerged Vice Chairman, Asso. Prof. Ikechukwu Igwenyi was elected Secretary, while Dr. Agwu Uzoma Patience emerged Treasurer.

Speaking shortly after he was declared winner, Dr. Basil Onwe thanked his colleagues for electing him as their new leader, promising to do everything within his powers to protect the integrity and uphold the welfare of members.

He assured them that his administration would run an open door policy and maintain strong tie with relevant affiliate unions within the University community, adding that his emergence would ensure equity and probity in the exercise of their legitimate functions.

Dr. Basil Onwe hails from Ikwo in Ikwo local government area of Ebonyi State and lecturer at the Department of Banking and Finance in the Faculty of Management Sciences of the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
