Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Sidie Mohamed Tunis, has disclosed that the parliament will look into post-election issues in the sub-region.

Speaking during the 2020 Second Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament which held virtually, Sidie stated that the parliament will look into all post-election issues arising from the just concluded elections in in five countries within the sub-region.

Ghana, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Cote d’ Ivoire and Niger, it would be recalled, held elections in the region recently.

Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire, it would also be recalled, were still battling with post-election issues which were a fall out from the move by the presidents to contest for a third term in office.

Tunis however insisted on the parliament’s call for all stakeholders in the electoral process to support fair and credible elections across the region.

Tunis further recalled the transitional government in Mali, following the ouster of President Ibrahim Keita, saying that the parliament will continue to watch closely, proceedings in Mali.

“You may recall that a parliamentary fact-finding mission was sent to that country in August of 2020, to ascertain unfolding developments at the time. Unfortunately, the mission could not go on as planned due to uncertainties brought upon the republic by the staged coup.

“Nevertheless, it is still very important that we engage all stakeholders in the Malian political realm to work out genuine peace and stability in the West African State. Against this front, I, in consultation with the Bureau, shall reconstitute and dispatch another fact-finding mission to the Republic of Mali in the no distant future,” Sidie said.

further said the aim of the mission was to assess the current political situation and advise the parliament on areas that need their intervention.
