Edo State Government has concluded plans to deploy town criers to about 192 wards, across 18 local government areas, to mobilise and inform unemployed people as well as to register them in the ongoing ‘Edo Jobs Initiative.’
A statement from Governor Godwin Obaseki’s Chief Press Secretary, John Mayaki said: “Some people still don’t understand how to go about the registration. You do not need to travel far to register.
You don’t need to go all the way to your local village of origin. All you need is to visit the headquarters of the local government council of your residence and avail yourself of this opportunity. If you stay in Oredo, register there. It is free.”
The state government announced the commencement of registration process for the programme earlier this month; in furtherance Obaseki’s promise to create 200,000 jobs.
However, to support the previous announcement and to further disseminate the information to the uninformed, the government chose to adopt the town-crier method of mass communication.
“By using the town crier method, the government hereby, once more, calls on those unemployed residents in the state who are yet to register in the ongoing ‘Edo Jobs Initiative’ in the 18 councils to do so while the offer lasts,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Anselm Ojezua, in the state, has praised Obaseki’s innovation in the governance of the state.
He said this in in an interview in Benin, where he also spoke on why the governor has not announced his cabinet, after 100 days in office.
On the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s claim that Obaseki is running the state like a sole administrator, the Ojezua said: “One of the problems we have had in the past, as a state and nation, is the fact that our leaders have consistently neglected the principle of adequate planning.
“Under the PDP, we were like a rudderless ship. People occupied positions for the sake of it, whether they were qualified or prepared for such positions or not. There was no manual, plan, roadmap, milestones or timelines for commissioners to work with.  When (former governor Adams) Oshiomhole came into office, there was a departure from the past. He set up an economic team.”
On PDP challenging APC’s victory at the tribunal, he expressed confidence that his party, APC, won and defeated the former legitimately.
He insisted the election was peaceful, free, fair and credible, saying: “We have situations where some politicians sponsored non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to say things that have no basis.
“When the petition came, none of these issues were canvassed by them. Rather, what we saw was that they complained about non-accreditation and over-voting…”
