senate President, Bukola Saraki, yesterday, read President Muhammady Buhari’s correspondence requesting confirmation of Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu.
The letter of confirmation forwarded to the Senate on Wednesday, June 23, 2016, was written by Professor Yemi Osinbajo when his boss was on vacation and away in London, the United Kingdom on medical leave.
In the letter, the Presidency also sought the confirmation of four other persons as members of the board of the anti-graft agency.
The other four names forwarded to the senate included Ndasule Moses, Lawan Mamman, Galadanca Iman Najib and Adeleke Adebayo Rafiu.
A part of the letter said “the EFCC Act of 2004 (which) established the commission makes it responsible, among other things, for the coordination and enforcement of all economic and financial crime laws and enforcement functions conferred on any person or authority.
“Apart from other ex-officio members of the commission provided for, the Act also provides for four eminent Nigerians with any cognate experience of the following, finance, banking, law and accounting.
“In view of the following, I, hereby, draw your excellency’s attention to the vacancy that existed in the EFCC. Having carefully considered eminently qualified Nigerians for the vacant position, I am pleased to inform you of the appointment of the aforementioned persons and to propose them for confirmation of the senate as provided by the EFCC Act.
The Senate President did not refer the letter to any committee as is the tradition in the chamber. It could not also be ascertained if the president’s request would be addressesd before lawmakers go on annual leave next week.
