From Felix Ikem, Nsukka

The Nsukka branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Enugu State, has honoured Dr. Michael Ajogwu, the Chairman of Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and Chief Donald Ekete, the Managing Director of Eketeson Resources International Limited, with merit awards for their contributions to the development of the state.

Also honoured were Chief Onyedikachi Attah, a successful businessman and philanthropist, HRH Igwe Maduabuchi Nevobasi and Chairman Agwu LGA Council of Traditional Rulers, among others.

The award ceremony was part of the activities marking the association’s 2022 Law Week, with the theme; “Transformational Governance the Role of Lawyers.”

Mr. Ugo Ukwueze, the Chairman of the NBA Nsukka branch, in his opening remark, said the law week was an annual ritual that the lawyer used to reflect and reassess the journey so far and chart a new course for the coming year.

“Law week is an age-long tradition in the legal community and its importance is worst rated in our collective consciousness.

“It is a period of reflection on our sacred duties, first as ministers in the temple of Justice and integrally a major actor in the theatre of national and global development.

“It is also a season of interrogating societal ills and status quo that wouldn’t guarantee free access to enjoy liberty declared inalienable to our common humanity, as well as a platform for celebrating our industry and mileage in nation-building,” he said.

The chairman explained further that the awardees were carefully selected based on their contributions to the development of the Enugu state, humanity, and society in general.

“The awardees today become the ‘friend of the bar,’ they were carefully selected for the merit award because they are distinguished in the various fields of endeavours and they have contributed immensely to the development of Enugu state, humanity, and the society in general,” he said.

While Ajogwu, Igwe Nevobasi, Chief Attah, and others made huge monetary donations to the association, Chief Ekete announced that he would landscape with asphalt the entire premises of Nsukka High Court.

The award recipients in their separate remarks expressed appreciation to the NBA Nsukka for the honour done to them, promising that they would continue to contribute their quotas to the development of the state, humanity, and society in general.
