Four persons were killed and several others injured yesterday at Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State as a gas cylinder exploded.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at a gas station in Obosi, during the refilling of gas to a customer’s cylinder.
The cylinder was said to have exploded, killing the gas station attendant and three customers instantly and injured scores at the scene.
An witness Mr. Nnaemeka Chidum told Daily Sun that the casualties would have been more, if the fire had spread to the gas tank at the back of the station.
He noted that it was only the cylinder that exploded and expressed gratitude to God that it did not spread to the gas tank that would have spread to nearby houses.
“I was at the other side of the road when I heard a sound like bomb and fire from the gas station. I wanted to run when I heard the sound, but fell down and after some time I stood up and saw people running towards the station.
“When I got there, I saw many human parts scattered all over the place, many people were injured which I cannot count but they were rushed to hospital for treatment,” Chidum stated.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Nkeiruka Nwode, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who confirmed the incident said four yet to be identified corpses suspected to be customers were killed by the explosion, while many were injured.
Nwode added that their bodies were deposited at a morgue at Obosi.
She said the affected gas station had been cordoned off, while investigations have commenced to ascertain the cause of the explosion, saying the police will make the report public after the investigation.
The PPRO, however, commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives to the explosion and prayed God to accept their souls in His Kingdom.
