Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has sacked 11 teachers for posssession of fake certificates

SUBEB Chairman, Stephen Odey, who disclosed this during a verification and promotion exercise for teachers at Biase Local Government Area recently, said the affected persons failed to tender the requisite qualifications needed to work as a class teachers before the board.

Odey said since they cannot produce authentic papers to teach as teachers, they have been demoted as security men in some schools.

“You have no business being in the teaching profession without the requisite qualifications, you cannot give what you do not have. If you want to become a teacher present your certificate or do the right thing by going to school to read and qualify for the job. Your services will, henceforth, be needed in the area of tackling insecurity challenges being faced by the school,” he said.

The board chairman expressed worry over decline in the number of pupils enrolled in the public primary schools, which he attributed to the fallen standard of basic education in the state.

“Gone are the days when teachers were highly respected in the society; not now that we are struggling to get respect. The reason is because a lot of un-qualified people have found their way in to the system.” According to Odey, it was on such premise that most parents are withdrawing their wards from public schools to private schools that are not even more equipped than the public schools.

The SUBEB boss enjoined teachers to live up to their responsibilities by making use of available resources to improve standard of education in the country.

On the issue of regular payment of teachers’ salaries in the state, he said: “SUBEB has not taken over payment of salaries yet, the Ministry of Local Government is still responsible for that. When we eventually take over payment of your salaries, you will not have any cause to complain.”
