The Federal government has approved the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) for the MBBS programme of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State.
This was contained in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abakaliki by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Iyke Ubochi.
Ubochi quoted the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, as breaking the good news during the 53rd meeting of the Senate of the institution held on Thursday.
The PRO said that following this development, the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) would be renamed Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Teaching Hospital.
The statement partly read: “Consequently, FETHA will now be referred to as Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Teaching Hospital. The good news was made known by the Vice-Chancellor of the University during the 53rd meeting of Senate held on Thursday, 14th February 2019.”
Giving further details in a telephone chat with our correspondent, Ubochi explained that the provost of the medical school of the university already appointed by the vice-chancellor would now take over the leadership of the teaching hospital at the appropriate time.
Ubochi said: “We have a provost who is in charge of the medical school. The provost will now be in charge of the hospital.”
Asked what would be the fate of the current Chief Medical Director of FETHA now made a teaching hospital, Dr Onwe Ogah, who has been holding sway before the approval by the Federal government, he said that further information on that would be made available to the public in due course.
