The Federal Government, through the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), will soon consolidate on the gains of the military’s defeat of insurgency in the North East region by rolling out a project aimed at restoring good relations and neighbourliness in the affected states.
To achieve this, the Director General of IPCR, Professor Oshita Oshita, will lead a high-level advocacy team of the UNHCR/IPCR to meet with governors and stakeholders in Borno and Yobe states for the commencement of the community peace-building and coping strategies support project.
A statement by Media Assistant to DG IPCR, Mr. Abu Michael, said the programme would address such issues as “lack of sustainable peace; lack of access to land and property; challenges in the role of traditional, community, religious leaders, youth, women and security operatives in peace-building and access to justice; limited understanding and use of Restorative Justice and Reconciliation (RJR) measure; and the absence of systematic transitional and restorative justice mechanisms, which will allow for rehabilitation of offenders and their reconciliation and resettlement into the communities.”
He said for the rule of law to be seen to have taken hold, the regulator of the free zones should be allowed to drive all the processes in the free zones, while explaining that the Association of Nigerian Exporters was not comfortable with the meddlesomeness by outsiders in the administration of the free zones.
