Several roads in Asaba, Delta State, were submerged by flood following torrential rain on Sunday night.
The flood rendered the roads impassable for most hours of yesterday.
Although residential apartments and office buildings were not completely submerged, it was observed that some people scooped water from houses when Daily Sun monitored the situation.
Worst hit were parts of Okpanam Road, Inter-Bau/Summit Roundabout, DSS/Court roads, Jesus Saves Road, Marian Babagida Way and DLA/Ibusa roads.
The flood jolted residents, particularly, as some of them could not access their offices.
Most workers stayed away from work in areas well known for excessive and perennial flooding.
Some of the popular offices flooded included the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) office complex, Women Affairs Primary School as well as some private business offices on Okpanam Road that also houses many public offices and banks.
Daily Sun also observed that many children could not go to school in Asaba as their parents would not let them due to the heavy downpour.
Due to the development, residents have called on the state government to expedite action on the on-going construction of drainage project on the Okpanam Road to address the perennial flooding in the capital.
However, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. John Nani assured that the government was already working to address the situation and said flood channels on Okpanam Road were being de-silted and generally being opened up.
Nani warned residents especially those in the urban centres to desist from dumping refuse indiscriminately in drainages and water channels.
He added that the practise was partly responsible for the flooding challenges.
Meanwhile, headquarters of the Delta State Police Command along Okpanam Road in Asaba was also flooded due to the heavy downpour on Sunday night.
Officers of the command and visitors parked their vehicles on both sides of the dual carriageway of Okpanam Road because of the flood.
Daily Sun, however, observed that offices, cells and other features within the main premises of the command were not affected due to the elevated platform that serves as the entrance.
The headquarters, it was gathered, had become prone to flooding because of its location as a residual spot for flood water coming from Okpanam town and Inter-Bau end of the dual carriageway.
Meanwhile, the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Zane Mohammed Ibrahim has taken over from his predecessor, Mr. Alkali Baba Usman who has been posted to the force headquarters in Abuja.
Ibrahim, who is the immediate past police commissioner in Yobe State, promised to consolidate on the successes of the command by sustaining an established cooperation among the senior and junior officers.
He also pledged to sustain the synergy between the command and other sister security agencies, as well as continue to collaborate with the state government, traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the fight against crime.
Ibrahim advocated dialogue on the Biafra agitations and the Niger Delta struggle, saying: “You cannot quench fire by pouring petrol.”
