From Aidoghie Paulinus, Abuja

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, on Thursday, visited and inspected the demolished building in the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana.

The visit and inspection took place on the sidelines of the inauguration of President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana for a second term in office where Onyeama represented President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that the demolition of the building which was a subject of controversy between the Ghanaian Government and the Federal Government in 2020, was carried out purportedly on the instruction of the Ghana Urban Development Agency on June 19, 2020.

Following the furore over the demolished building, the Ghanaian Government had assured the Federal Government that it was going to rebuild the structure.

However, pictures emanating from the visit showed that the structure was yet to be rebuilt.

The Crises Monitoring and Public Communications Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued in Abuja, said Onyeama ended the visit with an interactive session with a cross-section of the Nigerian community in Ghana.

Onyeama assured them that government remains seized with all the issues affecting Nigerians in Ghana, and urged Nigerians to remain good ambassadors of the country abroad.

“The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Geoffrey Onyeama, represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the inauguration ceremony of President Nana Akufo-Addo in Accra, Ghana, yesterday 7 January, 2021.

“The Honourable Minister also took out time to visit and inspect the demolished building in the Nigerian High Commission, which is yet to be rebuilt.

“The Honourable Minister ended the visit with an interactive session with a cross-section of the Nigerian community in Ghana. He assured them that government remains seized with all the issues affecting Nigerians in Ghana, and urged Nigerians to remain good Ambassadors of the country abroad,” the statement read.
