Police authorities in Gombe State said they have arrested among others, a 77-year-old man, Abubakar Jauro, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.
Jauro, who resides in Bolari Quarters of Gombe metropolis, was said to have been caught in the act, last Thursday evening, after he lured the girl to the premises of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) where he works as a security guard.
The Daily Sun gathered that relations of the girl trailed her to a room within the VON premises where reportedly Jauro committed the act.
Some irate youths were said to have threatened to burn down the office, but for the timely intervention of the police invited to the scene by the North East zonal correspondent of VON, Mrs. Rabecca Muazu.
Jauro reportedly said he invited the girl to his security post to give her empty table water containers based on her request.
According to a statement issued by the police and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mary Obed Mallum, on Tuesday, the command also burst a cell of armed robbers said to be terrorising Bojude, Ashaka, Nafada and Dukku communities.
DSP Mallum gave the names of the suspects as Musa Usman alias Sarki, who is gang leader, Gidado Adamu, Bappah Mohammed and Bello Buba.
The police said two locally made pistols, one iron rod, and an axe were recovered from the suspects.
“Equally, the command arrested one Umaru Mohammed alias Juma Bala’I, a notorious kidnapper, who has been on the police wanted list at various commands in the north especially in Adamawa, Kaduna, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara states,” the statement added.
Items recovered from the kidnapper included two cutlasses and one SIM card allegedly used in threatening his victims.
The PPRO commended the public for heeding to the call of the newly-appointed Commissioner of Police, Shina Tairu Olukolu, to collaborate and support the command with genuine information, which she said has already begin to bear fruits.
She said all the suspects would be charged to court while assuring the public that the command would continue to serve them better.
