Over 500 widows in Anambra State recently got gift items worth thousands of naira, courtesy of FC Ifeanyi Ubah Supporters’ Club, Nnewi, which feted the widows, from Awka North and South local government areas of the state.
Items distributed to the women included electric kettles, electric stoves, vegetable oil, electric jugs, cartons of noodles, bags of rice and assorted packs of tissue papers.
There was a mild drama during the presentation, as one of the widows, Mrs. Esther Molokwu, rejected the electric jug given to her on the ground that power supply in her area had been irregular in the past six months.
She commended FC Ifeanyi Ubah Supporters’ Club for the gesture, but said she could not collect any gift item that had to do with electricity until the power crisis in the country was resolved.
Molokwu used the opportunity to call on the different power generation and distribution companies in the country and the regulating agencies to remember Awka and its environs.
While presenting the items to the widows, the chairman of FC Ifeanyi Ubah Supporters’ Club, Awka North and South, Mr. Emeka Okwa, said the gesture was to show love to the widows. He requested their prayers for FC Ifeanyi Ubah and its chairman, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah.
“We are doing this to show love to the widows. We are not doing this to display wealth but to show love to mankind as lovers of football. When you go to Europe, there is a trophy they play for called Charity Cup. We are bringing it down to our people. So, this gesture is like a community shield, meant to show love to the people, especially the less privileged.
“Due to our limited resources, we gave the gift items to widows in Awka North and South local government areas of Anambra State. We have the hope of extending it to other local government areas by next year.”
Okwa used the opportunity to call on government and public-spirited individuals to emulate the gesture and show love to widows and the less privileged.
A beneficiary, Mrs. Amaka Onwudinjo, said members of the club had shown the widows mercy and kindness through the gifts. She assured them that Ifeanyi Ubah would be rewarded by the widows in due time.
Another widow, Mrs. Victoria Agummadu, a mother of six, prayed for God’s blessings on the organisers for remembering widows and for wiping their tears through the gift items.
She urged other individuals, corporate bodies and non-governmental organisations to always remember the less privileged, saying that God would always bless anyone that showed compassion to widows and orphans.
