From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

THE Bayelsa State Police command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing of a senior police officer, Mattew Akpos by gunmen dressed in Special Anti- Robbery Squad outfit, Monday night in Yenagoa

Akpos, who until his death was an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was killed by the gunmen close to the OMPADEC school field in Amarata suburb of the state capital.

According to investigations, the gunmen posed as a “special police squad.”

A witness said: “They wore the uniform of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and police bulletproof vests.”

He said the gunmen drove into the community in a black Hilux vehicle, accosted their target and dragged him to the vehicle but he resisted and shot one of them.

His account was corroborated by another resident who said the gunmen trailed the victim to the area and wanted to force him into their vehicle.

He said while Akpos was being dragged into the vehicle, he resisted his assailants and in the process pulled out his pistol to shoot one of them.
