Gunmen have killed three Policemen and two soldiers along the Enugu/Abakaliki Expressway.
The rampaging gunmen, said to have operated in two Toyota Sienna buses, according to liable police source, first attacked the Military checkpoint at Idodo, Enugu State, where they killed two soldiers before proceeding to the border checkpoint.
The policemen were shot dead when the gunmen attacked a police station at the boundary between Ebonyi and Enugu State. However, another policeman, who escaped death had a bullet wound as he was shot in the leg. The policeman is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in Abakiliki.
According to a police source, the incident happened saturday night.
Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chris Anyanwu, confirmed the incident , saying that , “yesterday’s attack by unknown gunmen at Ebonyi/Enugu boundary happened at about 6 .08 pm. Three Police personnel of Operation Safer Highway, were fatally injured, and were later confirmed dead. The hoodlums, who operated in two Toyota Sienna buses, drove into the Check-point and opened fire on the policemen.”
However, a witness said: “They reportedly opened fire on Soldiers at Idodo Military checkpoint,killing two soldiers.
Done with the soldiers at Idodo, the gunmen proceeded towards Ebonyi,and again, opened fire on the policemen on duty at the border checkpoint between Enugu and Ebonyi. Three policemen were killed on the spot,while another policeman was shot in n the leg.”
Though the police in Ebonyi have confirm the killing of their men, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Nigeria Army, Enugu, Joseph Uneakalu , said he just read about the incident somewhere, but did not have details
