…Demand N20m ransom on abducted wife

From Sola Ojo, Kaduna

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have allegedly shot dead a Kaduna-based businessman, Alhaji Sherif Abida Yazid, along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway.

A top security agent, who declined to be named, and another source close to the family confirmed the development to Daily Sun, in Kaduna, yesterday.

The late Sherif, it was gathered, was on his way from Abuja to Kaduna, in company with his wife when he was accosted by the gunmen. He was later shot on the neck while his wife was taken  away around Old Toll Gate, about 13 kilometres from Kaduna.

When some newsmen visited the crime scene, locals disclosed that  when they heard  gunshots, they quickly alerted security operatives who were just a stone throw away from the area, and added that by the time the security men go to the scene, the attackers had disappeared into a forest, in the neighborhood.

As at the time of filing this report, security agents are said to be on the trail of the gunmen and to, possibly, rescue the abducted widow.

Yazid’s body was later brought back to the family house along Jabi Road, in Kaduna, for burial.

Immediately news of the death of the late businessman broke, friends and relatives trooped to the house, to offer condolences.

The Sultan Bello Mosque was filled to capacity when the corpse was moved there for final prayers. He was later buried at the Isa Kaita Road burial ground, amid tears.

In recent times, the Kaduna-Abuja dual carriage expressway has become a nightmare for travellers and security agents, which is the rationale it is the reason behind the massive deployment of joint task force to the highway, with kidnapping and robbery happening there on a daily basis.
