Suspected political thugs, numbering six, on Monday, attacked a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Alhaji Fatai Diekola and two of his aides.

Diekola who was until recently a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was allegedly macheted on the head and hand by the suspected political thugs.

Confirmed sources told our correspondent that Diekola, who was a former Chairman of Osogbo Local Government Area, was attacked at Alekuwodo area of Osogbo where he had gone to canvass for votes for his party ahead of the Thursday rerun election in some parts of the state.

Daily Sun gathered that the PDP chieftain was attacked at ward 05 unit 17, Adewale Street, Alekuwodo in Osogbo Local Government Area of the state.

Sources said the suspected gun-wielding thugs shot sporadically into the air when they got to the area to scare the people.

Findings revealed that two aides of the PDP leader, who were in the vehicle with him were also shot, while Diekola was attacked with axes and sustained deep cuts.

He was, however, taken away by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).

A former commissioner for Information and Strategy in the state, Mr. Sunday Akere, confirmed the attack on Diekola and his aides.

He said he has not been able to speak with the PDP leader as his telephones were switched off.
