He is a cat with nine lives. And going by his recent experience, he could as well be described as a “destiny child”. Yes, he is indeed!

Sunday Oyeronbi aka Squi has been in the music business for over 15 years. For his talent, the HND holder has a number of works to his credit. And guess what, he is young, easy going but quite famous in his hood.

In this interview, the musician gives an insight into his career, dreams and challenges. He also narrates how he miraculously survived an accident that claimed 13 lives on Christmas Day, 2018.

Tell us about your parents and growing up?

I am from a family of four kids. Growing up was fun, though there were challenges. I am an orphan. I lost my dad 16 years ago and my mom three years ago.

How did your journey into the world of entertainment begin?

It started right from my secondary school days. All my life, I have been listening to music. I do hangout in clubs, at carnivals and wherever there is good music. I represented my school at various events and it was obvious I had the talent and people saw it shining through, so they advised me to start something for myself, having discovered my talent.

How would you describe your sound?

I am into Afro hip-pop but what I do is very Afrocentric, because my sound is unique and different from others. I also like to do live performances.

How do you get inspiration to write songs?

I don’t copy others. I compose and write down my music. I get inspiration when I listen to people. Most times, when I am alone, I get inspiration. It could happen at any time of the day, even on the streets; it could happen anywhere.

Are you anticipating any collaboration with other artistes?

Yes, I am. I am looking forward to a number of collabos with other musicians. For instance, I know Qdot; I have known him for over two years now. Olamide, Burna Boy and others are also on my mind. These are people I respect so much. I know they are very busy but I am preparing myself and planning my video shoot so that I won’t miss out when I meet them. You know, I am also very busy. I do shows, I have a laundry and I work in a hotel but music is the major thing for me.

What challenges do you envisage?

Challenges? No matter how good you are, if you don’t have a backup plan, you may not get anywhere because finance is key in the music industry. That is why I am doing some business to help myself. So, you see, challenges will always come but always remember, no pain, no glory. He who must wear the crown must pay the price.

Are you in a relationship? If yes, is she supportive of your career?

My music is my girlfriend for now. I don’t have any girlfriend, I must confess. For now, my music is my relationship. You’ll lose your dreams if you focus on women. Besides, most ladies don’t want to be supportive if you are a musician. However, I try to make them my friends, I don’t judge by looks. I had this lady I was dating back in the day but I didn’t have much so she broke up with me.

Could you describe your ideal woman?

She must be smart, patient, God-fearing and beautiful.

Who are your mentors when it comes to music?

Wow! I have quite a number of them and they include Tuface and D’banj. On the foreign scene, I look up to Tupac and R. Kelly.

Can you marry a single mom?

(Laughter) I don’t see anything wrong in marrying a single mom. Why not? If she comes across as honest, smart, beautiful and God fearing, I won’t hesitate to go for her.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In the next five years, I will be an international artiste, exploring the world and doing great exploits. Yes, I believe God has kept me for a purpose. Let me tell you something, I was the only survivor of a fatal accident that happened on Christmas Day, December 25, 2018. It was the day I was supposed to travel out of Nigeria with Davido and a host of other artistes for a show. So, I must fulfill my destiny. Though, it may tarry, time will definitely tell. The experience inspired me to write a song, Na So I See Am, which was produced by Helen Pink. This song was about the accident that could have claimed my life on December 25, 2018. The accident happened on my way to Ikorodu, Lagos and 13 people died instantly. I was the only survivor. Luckily, I was rushed to Arulogun Hospital in Lagos. But before then, I had planned going for shows because it was a festive period. I had a show in Dubai where I was to feature alongside Davido but I missed it!

How did you feel missing an opportunity to perform alongside Davido?

I feel great because I am alive. Also, I am healthy and happy. I am about to release a song in respect of my experience; I am releasing the single soon. It is a big project for me and I am dropping a video alongside the audio.
