Public office holders should not run for more than two terms; they should be able to deliver within the space of two terms. Anything after two terms does not make any sense. If one cannot make impact within two terms in office, there is no need to continue.

The practice all over the world is for public office holders to hold offices for two terms. The idea is partly for the electorate to be able to assess the performance of the elected officer after the first term and decide whether to re-elect or reject him or her for the second term. This practice puts the elected officials on their toes to perform, in order to get elected. It is therefore an accountability measure. But this will make more sense in climes where the vote of the electorate counts. Some may argue that a public officer can be elected for a single term and be removed through impeachment if he or she does not perform or commits impeachable offence. However, this is difficult in a clime like Nigeria where the process of removal is cumbersome and sometimes, almost impossible.

As for the number of tenure one should handle public offices, I know that it is more of a constitutional matter. But if am to just contribute, I would say that two terms is okay because most nations of the world, both developed and developing ones, adopt two terms and it is working well for them. Nigeria should key into that so that we can enjoy the gains of democracy.

Public office holders should go for a single term simply because it helps the country to manage its resources, and it brings out the best out of them. It creates an healthy competition between a predecessor and successor. More so, it affords every part of the country or state the opportunity to have a representative to govern them. It makes for a way of checkmating the corrupt practices among the people and their cohorts. So, single term is the best for our country’s development

I would say that the public office holders should use two terms approximately, in order to implement a sustainable and effective economic growth that would reflect the dividends of democracy. In fact, it is not justifiable for any public holder to seek for more than two terms in a particular office. That amounts to greed.

For me, one term of office is enough but it has to be more than four years as being operated, at present. By so doing, it will create room for another person to come and showcase his or her own experience. The issue of second or more terms encourages office holders to relax in their first terms, waiting to wake up during their second term which they are not sure of. That is why many of our office holders are desperate to get return ticket.

Every working government deserves adequate time to function very well. But our peculiar case in Nigeria where elected political office holders hold office for too long in a bid to recoup whatever they had spent during the election, makes the second term a do-or-die affair and an avenue to amass wealth and engage in financial misappropriation. So, if actually the level of corruption in Nigeria is something to go by, I think, political officer holders should spend a single term of six years. Because of our perception towards second term, the conditions it brings into the political space of Nigeria, a single term of six tears whereby an office holder will go in and have his master plan and try to execute them within the period, is enough. And, whatever they cannot do within that period can also be done by their successors. So, based on the political conditions of Nigeria, I suggest single term of six years.

Public office holders should spend two terms in office because two terms is enough for someone to achieve whatever they want in terms of good governance. For instance, if a governor has spent eight years in office, it is expected that he must have executed whatever programmes he has. When someone stays in the office for too long, his ideas begin to fade. But when a new person comes in, he brings fresh ideas.
