Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Enugu State, Dr Sam Onyishi, has said that he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) because of the impunity and imposition in his former party.

Onyishi, who disclosed this at a press conference, on Thrsday, in Enugu, after his registration last Sunday at his Ihe Ward, added that he was also encouraged to leave the PDP for the APC because of the character of President Muhammadu Buhari, who he said, is working hard to revive Nigeria.

The former governorship aspirant, who is also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Peace Mass Transit (PMT), however, warned that he would quit the APC the moment it takes to the obnoxious practices he noticed in the PDP.

On what he expects in the APC, he said: “Just one thing, freedom of expression, let the people be allowed to make their choices, allow the people to vote for whoever they want. I don’t want to be anything in the APC apart from sitting down and watching somebody comes out to contest an election into the Nsukka local government, stands for that election and wins without being stopped undemocratically by another person. I don’t want others to suffer what I have suffered; I don’t want to give APC 18 years that I gave to the PDP. I won’t give APC more than four years, if they don’t do the right thing I will leave. If APC changes tomorrow and start doing another thing I will leave.”

Onyishi also lamented that he was in the PDP for over 18 years, but was not allowed to make his own contributions even when he was one of those funding the party in the state.

He said that as he has joined the APC, he would be one of those that would henceforth explain the good policies of President Buhari, pointing out that the president has been largely misunderstood by most Nigerians.

He noted that Buhari has been able to make Nigerians return to agriculture in less than two years of his administration with some states now producing rice, up to the quantity to be exported.

He also applauded President Buhari’s anti-corruption war, saying that today there are no longer sacred cows as those who breached the law are being prosecuted.

Onyishi also said that any day the president and the party derailed from running on the true principles of democracy, he would quit the party, urging his followers to have faith in the APC.

During his registration, the Enugu State APC Chairman, Mr Ben Nwoye, expressed happiness that Onyishi had finally joined the party, disclosing that the PMT boss has been helping the party in the state financially.

“Onyishi personally paid for the state APC office and zonal office accommodation rent. The state is happy to have PMT boss as one of the party members,” Nwoye said.
