Ibadan is one great city pulsating with Nigerian vibes as well as parading an array of talented singers and music producers that are lighting up the atmosphere on a daily basis.
Welcome to the world of Smooth Kiss, Fabulous Pizzy, B.K GMB, Bazzo, and Seun Natural among others. They are the youngsters shaping today’s sound in the capital city.
Agbola Peter Adeyemo aka Smooth Kiss is a graduate of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and a signee of Bugati Records Group (BRG).
An Afro pop artist and indigene of Osun State, Smooth Kiss started singing in church at the age of six after discovering that he had a talent for singing.
In 2006, the musician whose influences include American R&B legend, R Kelly, dropped his debut single entitled, O Ti N’ Lo, which made waves and won him followership.
Smooth Kiss is also a producer. The official BRG’s producer started music production in 2008. Commenting on his career, he said: “I was in Lagos pushing my hustle before I moved down to Ibadan. I started managing a studio for a friend before I got signed to BRG. Initially, I was producing for just myself, but some artistes started telling me I was selfish. So, I switched from just producing for myself to producing for other artistes, and along the line, I was making money. Though, it wasn’t easy initially, while some producers encouraged me, some discouraged me; and that motivated me a lot. My dreams are bigger than me, I keep pushing on and won’t give up.”
Awolala Opeyemi aka Fabulous Pizzy is a professional recording and performing artiste. A native of Osun State, he hit the limelight after releasing his single, So Fun Wan.
A Sociology graduate of Ado Ekiti University, Fabulous Pizzy started music when he was eight-years-old but went professional in 2010. The last born of his family, the act got his nickname, Fabulous Pizzy while in secondary school.
According to the musician, God, his mum and the church inspired him. Pizzy, who defines his kind of music as Afro hip hop, is currently working on the remix of So Fun Wan featuring the king of street lingo, Olamide.
However, he views his challenges as an up-and-coming act philosophically. Hear him: “My challenges are enormous but I feel they sharpen me and hone my skills; that is why I won’t give up.”
Blackberry singer, Akum Blessed also known as B.K GMB, is a rap artiste and most recently a fitness enthusiast.
The act was born and raised in Cameroon. Having discovered his talent when he was a toddler, he started as a sketch artist then switched to dancing and finally found himself rapping.
GMB moved to Nigeria in 2006 and in 2010 recorded his first single entitled, Blackberry. Also a professional sound engineer who runs a click of musical artists known as Global Music Business (GMB), the artist defines his style as hardcore.
B.K GMB, who is currently collaborating with Skales on a project, also wrote the French version of his Shake Body. In 2011, he worked with Skuki and also featured Konga on a single.
“My challenges are basically funding, sourcing for proper events, how to brand myself, and reaching out to business contacts,” he said.
Arowolo Ayomide aka Bazzo is another performing artist lighting up the city of Ibadan.
Bazzo, who started music five years ago, grew up in the ancient city. His nickname, Bazzo was given to him on the streets. Currently, he has no recording deal but has a couple of songs making waves on air.
He has this to say on his challenges: “My major challenge is funds. How do I promote my music without money? I have a video to shoot, how do I get money for this? All these are challenges that artistes face everyday but I won’t give up. I have been in this for five years now and I have faith that, with hard work, I will hit the limelight.”
Yet another talented act from the city of Ibadan is Ojeyinka Oluwaseun Samuel also known as Seun Natural.
Born and bred in the ancient city, Natural graduated from Lead City University with a degree in Politics & International Relations. He started music as a drummer in church but went professional after joining a dance group known as Explicit, where he led the day-to-day activities.
Also a model and actor, Seun Natural defines his kind of music as Afro pop cum R&B. He is currently signed to Kopi Mighty Records.
In 2013, the singer dropped his first single entitled, Spend Owo, produced by T-Piano. The song brought him into the limelight and got him a record deal. In 2016, Seun Natural released another single entitled, Leave Story, produced by Martz Beat, which is currently on massive rotation across the country.
“My challenges are my strengths and stepping stones. Things like recording good songs, shooting good videos, promoting the songs to a stage where you will say ‘yes I am there’ are quite challenging. But, I am a fighter and not a quitter, so I wont give up on my dreams,” he said.
