The efforts by the Federal Government of Nigeria to fast track the extradition of Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, fondly called Sunday Igboho, may have suffered a setback.

This came as indications have emerged that the government of Benin Republic has resolved to in the first instance try Igboho in court allegedly obtaining a fake Beninoise international passport in Cotonou.

Reports from Benin Republic said Igboho and his wife, who were arrested on Monday night on their way to Germany at Cadjèhoun Airport, Cotonou, were taken to court on Thursday. But details of what transpired in the court we’re still sketchy at the time of filing this report.

Sources said the the Beninoise government said it would not handle a request for Igboho’s extradition, until he has been tried for the local offense he was arrested for on the Beninoise international passport.

A Beninoise lawyer, identified as Rafael Huvehnou, was said to have been hired to defend Igboho in the court.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai (retd), according to the sources, had written “two letters to the West African state, describing Igboho as a terrorist and murderer. The first letter was written on July 7th. A second letter, describing his bodily features, was passed on to the Benin Republic on Wednesday.”
