The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),   has commenced her Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide, but advised those who have already registered during the last registration exercise against embarking on another registration.

Abia State Administrative Secretary of INEC, Mr. Roy Obijuru, who stated this while interacting with Daily Sun, in Umuahia, said that those who get involved in double registration would be  prosecuted as it amounts to   offense against the commission.

He advised those who could not collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before or since the last general election to go to designated centers at the Local Government offices of the commission or such other suitable locations which would be made public later to check and collect their cards.

Obijuru, who was in company of the Commission’s Head of  Department (Operations), Mr. Gilbert Okolie, and Head of Department VEP, Mr. G.C. Achibie, explained that those who were not sure should first verify with the commission whether their names were captured in the last exercise  before embarking on another registration.

“If their names are found, we will issue them with a voters card, but if their names are not there, then we will advise them to commence another registration”, the Admin Secretary said.

In a press release signed by Achibie, INEC explained that the exercise commences on Thursday, April 27,  and would take place on week days (Monday – Frday) from 9am to 3.00 pm daily, excluding public holidays.

The exercise is intended to enable citizens who have turned 18 years of age since the last registration and those who did not register during the last exercise to register as voters.

“It will allow those seeking transfer of their registration from one state to another or from one polling unit to another to do so. It will enable citizens who have the temporary Voters cards , but whose names are on the register to collect their permanent voters Cards”, he said

The Commission reiterated its commitment to consolidate democracy by ensuring that citizens are given the opportunity to register as voters on continuous basis as enshrined in the electoral act of 2010.

He appealed to citizens to cooperate with the commission to ensure success of the exercise.
