The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will conduct supplementary elections in six federal constituencies in Lagos State, on Saturday.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Sam Olumekun disclosed this to newsmen, at the secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council, in Alausa, yesterday.
Olumekun said the election would be conducted simultaneously with the governorship and House of Assembly elections.
The Lagos REC reeled out the affected federal constituencies where the electoral body would conduct supplementary elections to include; Oshodi/Isolo 1, Oshodi/Isolo II, Ojo, Etiosa, Somolu and Ajeromi Ifelodun.
He explained that in these areas violence, ballot box snatching and attack by hoodlums had marred the process of election, hence election could hold in those areas.
Olumekun explained why: “Section 33 (e) of the regulations and guidelines for the conduct of 2019 General Elections, stipulates that, ‘where the margin of lead between two leading candidates in an election is not in excess of the total number of voters registered in polling units where election are not held or voided in line with section 26 and 53 of the Electoral Act, the returning officer shall decline to make a rerun until polls have taken place in the affected polling unit and the result collated into the relevant forms for declaration and return.”
He warned that card readers would be used for the election and attempts to resist their use, by voters, would mean scoring the affected polling unit zero.
Meanwhile, Eze Ndigbo of Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos, Igwe Fred, has urged Igbo living in the state to support Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the elections.
He pleaded with the Igbo to eschew any insult and embarrassment from some Yoruba people due to the last presidential election.
Speaking at a meeting in Ajao Estate, yesterday, Igwe Fred said political exchanges is one of the trials people experience and should not be a source of friction and division.
The Eze Ndigbo, who condemned comments by some Yoruba leaders over the last presidential election, said this does not represent the position of all Yoruba.
He said there have been mutual understanding and stronger relationship and love between Igbo and Yoruba, in marriages, business, politics and friendship.
The Eze Ndigbo, who announced the adoption of the APC governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu by Ndieze Igbo and Ndigbo Lagos, explained that “Igbo leaders in Lagos took such decisions based on several considerations.”
