Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may fix a date for the Anambra Central senatorial rerun election this week.
A source disclosed this to Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, yesterday.
The election was nullified by the Court of Appeal in 2015, which ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacancy.
Court cases had stopped the commission from conducting the rerun, but Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a media interaction yesterday, said the commission was working for the withdrawal of the cases so as to allow for alternative dispute resolution mechanism to resolve the matter.
Speaking on the development, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the election, Chief Victor Umeh, said the INEC chairman was misled to believe there are pending court cases.
“There are no pending cases from any political party qualified to participate in the rerun,” Umeh said.
He said the pending cases were filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was affected by the judgment of the Court of Appeal.
