President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, said local and international indications have confirmed that the financial and social inequality gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria is getting wider by the day, in spite of several programmes designed and implemented by previous and present government to bridge the gap.

Wabba noted that whereas, in other developed and developing countries, the rich subsidise for the poor, the reverse seems to be the case in Nigeria, where the poor subsidise for the rich.

The NLC president spoke at the 10th Delegates Conference of Medical Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), in Abuja, yesterday, where he challenged government to correct socio-economic imbalance; through policies and programmes that would improve the socio-economic life of Nigerians.

He said: “Salary increase for all classes of workers in the society is done based on certain indices, either inflation or cost of living index. If salary of politicians are increased, justice demands that such should be done for other public workers.”
