The Federal Government’s determined efforts to exploit the solid minerals sector in its economic diversification process has received a major boost, as the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) is partnering a private firm to host the 5th International Mining Investment Conference and Exhibition on Nigeria (IMICON 2016) next month.
Dr. Peter Ola, who briefed newsmen in Abuja on behalf of the organising committee, said the conference was designed to foster information sharing that would lead to home grown investments in the mining sector.
Noting that  there “is a great risk in exploration due to illegal mining,” he  said there was urgent need to properly harness the nation’s abundant solid mineral endowments through a coordinated framework.
Ola explained that the conference, which will attract a large number of stakeholders and international investors whose activities are critical to the sector, will showcase the full potential of the Nigerian solid minerals sector.
The organisers said the conference will be special sessions meant strictly to facilitate the buy-in of Nigerians into some of the ideas that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has already put on the table, such as giving state governments a greater role and the step-by-step guidelines that will aid in mineral endowments gain within their jurisdictions.
According to him, other challenging aspects of the mining sector, such as the insufficiency of geo-science data, non-availability of accessible and practical financing models, as well as an institutional sector framework, which will enable the integration of the full value-chain, of the mining sector with others sectors of the economy, will be addressed.for our teeming population,” he stated.

The Federal Government has solicited China’s assistance for the completion of the Abuja Light Rail and the Greater Abuja Water Works projects, which have already been presented for funding by way of concessionary loan.
It also drew attention to the imbalance in trade relations between the two countries and emphasized the need to bridge the gap for the sustainability of the cooperation framework.
Minister of Budget and Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, made the appeal as Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China, signed a bilateral agreement worth more than eight million RMB Yuan, which is well above N340 million for feasibility studies on the second phase of the Abuja Solar Powered Traffic Control Signal, Agricultural Demonstration Centre and the 2016 Bilateral Training Programmes.
The agreement signed at the 6th session of the Economic, Trade and Technical Cooperation Joint Commission meeting in Abuja, is a prelude to Chinese government’s full involvement in the projects, once they are certified feasible.
The project is to be funded through gratis assistance as part of the 2012 Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement between the two governments.
A statement by Media Adviser to the Minister, Mr. Akpandem James, said that Udoma also called on the Chinese government to reduce the high tariff on agricultural exports from Nigeria, which currently stands at five per cent, a development, he said, was capable of narrowing the trade imbalance between the two countries. The imbalance averaged US$5.9 billion in the last five years.
Budget and National Planning Minister signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, Mr. Qian Keming, signed on behalf of his country.
According to the agreement, RMB Yuan 6, 000, 000.00 is allocated for training programmes; the agricultural centre is allocated RMB Yuan 1, 000, 000.00, while the solar project study has RMB Yuan 1, 200, 000.00.
