The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in a report released, on Monday, established that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) received a total of 11,703,709 applications 2010 and 2016 while out this number, total of 2,674,485 students, representing 23%; were admitted across the 36 states and the FCT between 2010 and 2015.
The NBS report indicated that over the 7 year period, Imo State recorded the highest number of applications and admission but in terms of the percentage, Yobe State had the highest admission as a percentage of total applications made.
In 2010, for instance, a total of 1,513,940 applications were received while 423,531 students were admitted with Imo, Delta, Anambra states emerging as the states with highest application while Adamawa, Niger and Sokoto has the highest ratio of admission to application.
The NBS stated that Adamawa and Niger states which received 14,483 and 16,556 applications; admitted 5,678 and 6,278 students respectively representing 38% of total number of students who sat for the examination in both states in 2010.
The NBS report further disclosed that in 2011, a total of 1,636,356 applications were received while 417,341 students, 26% of students who applied for JAMB got admission across the 36 states and the FCT in that year with Yobe state record of 7,879 applications out of which 3,185 students equivalent to 40% got admissions, making it the state with least application.
The lowest percentages of applications to admissions were recorded in 2013 and 2014 with 24% and 25% of applications to admissions recorded respectively during the period under review.
Also in 2013, Yobe state emerged the state with highest percentage of applications to admission, having 11,222 applications out of which 4,084 students representing 36%, got admission while Jigawa State with 16,214 applications and 6,169 admissions has the highest percentage of applications to admissions with 38% recorded in 2014.
The highest percentage of applications to admissions was recorded in 2015 with 30% of applications to admissions recorded. Yobe State with 17,461 applications and 9,703 admissions has the highest percentage of applications to admissions in the year with 56% recorded.
Yobe, Adamawa and Jigawa states top the list of states with the highest percentage ratio of admissions to applications while Imo, Delta and Oyo state recorded the highest number of applications while Imo state emerged as the state with the highest number of students that got admission in 2015.
In 2016, though admission process has not been completed, Imo, Oyo and Ogun states, in that order, recorded the highest number of students seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
