A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Pro Chancellor of Plateau State University, Bokkos, Prof. Mohammad Attahiru Jega, has advocated for adequate funding of states-owned universities in the country.

Prof. Jega made the call, on Tuesday, during a two-day  Retreat for Members of the Governing Council of Plateau State University Bokkos, held at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies NIPSS ,Kuru  with the theme” prospects and Challenges in the 21st Century.

“There is need for sustainable funding for states universities in Nigeria to revamp the educational sector. I appreciate the Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong for his commitment towards Plateau  University Bokkos which has started yielding desire results after several years of known accreditation of courses.

“We need sustainable funding for the University to enable it attend an enviable height among its equals around the World.”

Governor Simon Lalong, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Sonny Tyoden, reiterated the commitment of his administration in repositioning the state university into a globally competitive citadel of learning.

He expressed happiness with the level of stability the University has achieved in the last couple of years explaining that such a climate has largely been tenable due to the leadership exhibited by the visitor, Pro – Chancellor and Members of Council -since the restoration of academic activities.

Lalong said government is working assiduously to ensure that all the courses and programmes offered by the Institution have full accreditation particularly those which got interim accreditation in the shortest time  possible.

The Vice  Chancellor of the University Prof Doknan Danjuma Sheni said the retreat is to acquaint both old and new members of council on the workings, Governance and Administration of the University so as to achieve efficient service delivery .
