United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNAN ) recently commissioned a borehole and donated a generator to Onireke community, opposite Ojo Military Barracks, Lagos. The event witnessed a large turnout of members of the community.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Ezinne Joan Agha, president of UNAN, said: “Today, we are gathered here to witness the commissioning of a borehole project and donation of a generator. The essence is to observe the number four United Nations Development Sustainable Goal (SDG), which is provision of clean water and sanitation.”

Ezinne recalled that the group had earlier commissioned a borehole at Lafiaji in Eti-Osa Local Goverment Area and the residents were happy for the donation.

“The residents at Onireke were very happy and enthusiastic and grateful for the project. We also provided a generator for the community to use to pump water because of the irregular electricity supply,” she disclosed.

Ezinne advised the community to take ownership of the borehole and maintain it for their benefit. “I hope the community will use the borehole facility efficiently and protect the place from vandals beacuse this project is their own.”

Chairman, Board of Trustess, UNAN, Ambassador Ayo Olukanni, said the event was to give practical meaning of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals via UNAN.

He said: “This is a unique event because we have taken the bull by the horn to construct and implement one of the goals in terms of providing safe drinking water for the community and we hope they will take good care of the facility.”

Saka Adisa, community head, Onireke commended the sponsors for the gesture and assured them that the projects will guarded jealously to serve its purpose.

The community head also called on other spirited individuals and groups to emulate UNAN in donating one project or the other in the community as the government cannot do it alone.

Dauda Abisola Adisa, Secretary of Onireke community, said: “I am very happy for the project because the community has been expecting it for a very long time. This is a welcome development and members of the community will make good use of the facility and we are ready to protect the facility.”
