It was jubilation galore at Amichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Saturday when the community elected a new President-General to lead Amichi Development Union (ADU) for the next four years.

The election which was said to have suffered some initial postponements was eventually conducted when the entire members of the union both home and in diaspora agreed to continue leadership of the community with an elected PG and his executive.

Ninety delegates from the four quarters of Okpala, Ebenasa, Ezeudene and Afube that make up Amichi community formed the electoral college and were cleared to participate in the town union election under the supervision of officials from the Anambra State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Leader of the government delegation for the election, Mr Henry Nwasike told a multitude of the villagers who gathered at the town hall arena to comport themselves as some of them were anxious and eager to see who would emerge the next PG of Amichi at last.

In the lineup, Chief Cletus Udegbuana, Evang. Emeka Ezekiel and Chief Chukwujekwu Odikaesieme actually indicated their interest to contest the election but the third contender withdrew from the race leaving Chief Udegbuana and Evang. Ezekiel to slug it out.

Chief Udegbuana polled a total of eighty votes to defeat his opponent Ezekiel who had ten votes.

In his post-election speech, the President-General-elect thanked the Nnewi South Local Goverment Area Transition Committee (TC) Chairman, Hon Ikechukwu Anagboso, representatives of Governor Charles Soludo and other stakeholders for creating time to be in Amichi for the election.

He said that his community under his watch would not lose any of their shares from the government and expressed gratitude to them for a successful election as the PG of Amichi town. He assured them that it is a new dawn in the community, adding that development of various dimensions would commence in earnest.

He explained that one of the main areas of focus with his executive would be geared towards uniting the sons and daughters of the Amichi.

Chief Udegbuana promised that his administration would ensure improved security and infrastructural development of the town.

He, however, solicited the support of everyone in the task of building a new Amichi with the promise of a transparent administration.

In his comment, the leader of the governor’s delegation, Mr Nwasike said that the election of other officials took place sometime last year, noting that the election for the position of the PG became inconclusive due to some issues which according to him had been resolved.

The vice president, Dr Jeff Okeke, and other executive members were those earlier elected who would work with the newly elected president.

Hon Anagboso in his comment congratulated the PG-elect and his executive council. He expressed the hope that Amichi community would experience better days ahead under the new dispensation.
