President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, in Abuja, tendered unreserved apology to the injustice done to winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, by the then ,military administration in the country.

Recall that on that fateful day, the Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida administration had annulled indisputably Nigeria’s freest and fairest election in the nation’s history believed then to have been won by Abiola.

President Buhari said this at the investiture of Chief Abiola as Grand Commandeer of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.

At the event, President Buhari said the ceremony was not intended to open old wounds, but to “right the wrongs of the past.” He therefore apologised to the family of the late business mogul.

At the event, the late Chief Gani Fawenhinmi  was also conferred with the title of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) and likewise Alhaji Babagana Kingibe.

Also at the event, letters of apologies were received and read from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was said to be in far away Norway for an international engagement, who wished the Abiola family well with their new title. A letter of apology was also received from former Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for his absence at the ceremony.
