The newly-appointed acting Director Defence Information (DDI), Colonel Onyema Nwachuku, has assumed office with a call on the media to deny terrorist groups publicity.

He said publicity is the oxygen that keeps the terrorists going about perpetrating their evil acts on innocent citizens.

Nwachuku, has also called on the media to support the Nigerian Armed Forces on its commitment to ensuring national security.

Nwachuku, made the call while taking over from his predecessor, Brigadier-General John Agim, at the Defence Headquarters.

The new DDI said the security challenges bedeviling the nation overwhelms the  paramilitary agencies resulting in the military being called in to aid the civil authority to restore law and order and ensure peace and stability.

Col. Nwachuku assured that the military was ready to defend the territorial integrity of the nation with the last drop of its blood and to work to find a lasting solution to the havoc caused by the terrorists by denying them publicity.

He said: “I want to remind us that as media and public relations professionals, that publicity has been severally identified as the oxygen of terrorism. It is the oxygen of the terrorists; it keeps them going.

“Terrorism is a societal ill and aberration; it is a threat to our collective peace, unity and national development and must not be allowed to thrive.

“It is therefore pertinent to work hands in gloves to deny our common adversary the oxygen of publicity and crush the grandiose ego of terrorism.”
