Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Haliru Gwandu, on Friday, asked members of the Eminent Peoples Forum to live according to its name and shun all forms of shoddy deals to earn the trust and confidence of the public.
The forum comprises critical stakeholders drawn from religious communities, group leaders, traditional rulers and retired senior security officers in the state.
He gave the injunction while briefing Eminent Persons Forum (EPF) of his achievements since he assumed duties in the state.
“Let me use this medium to state that this forum as the name implies, consists of eminent people in the society. It should not be heard that members of this forum are found in any shoddy/illegal business.
“We should flee from every appearance of evil so that we shall maintain our eminence and integrity.
“It is not a forum for charge and bail of known criminals neither is it a forum to be used as a cloak of malice”, he said.
Mr. Gwandu said the importance of communities partnering the police in stemming the tide of crimes and criminality in the state and making it a safe haven for investors cannot be overemphasized as the police whose duty are to protect lives and property of citizens are confronted with challenges ranging from skyrocketing population of citizens and inadequate manpower.
“It has become imperative that in discharging our duties, the police must of a necessity partner and collaborate with the society to secure the common good for all.
“As I see it, effective and efficient policing of society is like a bird flying in the sky. As the bird cannot fly with one wing, so also the police cannot perform the duty of policing the society alone.
“It has to take the bird its two wings to fly high and well. The police and the communities are like the wings of the bird. This is the essence of community partnership”, he explained.
The police Commissioner called for more information to enable him combat crimes and criminality in the state.
