Former governor of Abia State and senator-elect for Abia North senatorial district, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has visited the Federal Medical Centre, (FMC) Umuahia, for routine check-up; as follow-up to the surgery he underwent in Germany last year.

He has also  called on the Federal Government to upgrade the FMC to a teaching hospital.

Kalu made the call shortly after having his medical check-up at the Centre, where he said the facility has all it takes to be a teaching hospital with specialization  in different fields.

The senator-elect  said most teaching hospitals across the country cannot boast of the type of structures and equipment as the FMC, Umuahia.

He added that the best way to properly place it is to convert the place to a teaching hospital.

Comparing himself to other politicians, Kalu said unlike others, he is not ashamed of undergoing check-ups in Umuahia.

He said the German hospital he underwent surgery were expecting him for the routine check-up but he trusts the capacity of the neurologists at the FMC.

“You know I usually come here for regular check-ups. I have already started pushing that this place be made a specialist hospital so that our people wouldn’t have to spend money travelling abroad and out of the state to access quality health care.

“Although I will soon go back to Germany, to conclude my medications, but, I came here because I believe in the capabilities of the neurologists to handle the check-ups,” he said.

Kalu, who was elected senator, to represent Abia North, in the February 23 National Assembly election, was accompanied by his retinue of aides and supporters.
