Armed robbers reportedly invaded Gwandu, Suru and Birnin-Kebbi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kebbi State and carted away the salaries of workers in the affected Councils.

Daily Sun gathered that the coordinated armed robbers, who targeted council workers’ salaries, made away with N9 million in Gwandu, unspecified amount in Suru and about N1.655 million meant for civil servants in Birnin-Kebbi local government.

Chairman of Gwandu LGA, Alhaji Shehu Bagudu, who confirmed the robbery while speaking with newsmen in Gwandu, yesterday, said the incident happened on May 24, while salaries of workers in the departments of Health and Agriculture in Gwandu local government area of Kebbi were to be paid by the cashier.

“The incident happened when the cashier of the area, Alhaji Bashir Gwandu, collected the money from the bank and was going to his house.

“Unknown to him, the thieves had been trailing him from the bank, and when he was about to open the gate leading to his house, the suspects attacked him and snatched his car with the money and drove away. The car was later discovered in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto,” he said.
The council chairman, also dispelled rumours that he was shielding the cashier, because he is his son-in-law, said he cannot stop police from doing their proper investigation.

He said: “I’ve not been able to sleep since the robbery incident took place. The boy has been my son-in-law before I became chairman of the council, and he is known to be trustworthy in the council.
