The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, on Saturday said his command is making frantic efforts to rescue a Reverend of the Methodist Church ,Nigeria, Akobo-Ojurin Diocese of Agodi, Ibadan, Dr Biodun Ogunbekun, who was kidnapped by gunmen on Thursday.
The clergyman was said to have been kidnapped in his farm at Kufi area, along Olounda-Aba Road, Ibadan at about 7pm on November 10.
A visit to the Agodi Methodist Church, Ibadan, yesterday evening revealed that the whereabouts of Ogunbekun was yet unknown, while the kidnappers had yet to make any contact with the church or his family for ransom.
The police boss in the state, Adegbuyi, who spoke through the command’s spokesperson, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, said necessary machinery has been set in motion to rescue the victim alive and arrest the suspected kidnappers.
According to Ajisebutu, “The Command is making frantic efforts to rescue him alive and arrest the culprits. The Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, has set in motion necessary machinery to ensure this objective is achieved. We shall give you an update later.”
The Bishop of the Diocese of Agodi of the church, Rt. Rev. Amos Ajiboye, who explained that Ogunbekun was kidnapped when he was about to leave the farm for his house on the fateful day, had appealed on behalf of the Prelate of the church, Dr. Kalu Uche, and Archbishop of Ibadan, Most Rev Kehinde Stephen, to Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, and other security agencies in the state to intervene and rescue Ogunbekun from his kidnappers.
“The whereabouts of the minister of God is still unknown. On behalf of the Prelate of the church, His Eminence, Dr. K. Uche, and the Archbishop of Ibadan, Most Rev. M.K. Stephen, I appeal to the Oyo State governor, AbiolaAjimobi, the state Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to please assist in finding the whereabouts of the minister of God and help release him unhurt,” he said
Ogunbekun was kidnapped four days after men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of Oyo State Police Command foiled an armed robbery attack on Methodist Cathedral Church, Agodi, Ibadan.
The spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the suspected armed robbers were arrested on November 6 at about 2pm through credible intelligence. The foiled robbery was allegedly planned by a worker in the church, who was said to have invited other members of the gang to attack the church during which the suspects planned to cart away N1.5million.
