Hundreds of women yesterday staged a peaceful protest in solidarity with Senator Dino Melaye over last week’s alleged assassination attempt on his life.
The women, who came from the seven local government areas in Kogi West Senatorial District, converged at the Aiyetoro Gbedde residence of Melaye and chanted anti-government songs.
They also carried placards some of which read, “We Kogi West women warn Yahaya Bello, David Onoja, Taofeeq Isa”, “Touch Dino and face our wrath”, “Kogi women say no to assassination attempt”, “Do not kill the light, let the light shine”, among others.
The spokesperson of the group, Mrs Jallo Ikusomoro, said the women decided to stage the peaceful protest because the senator was fighting for the poor masses, especially women in the country.
She said Melaye was a pillar of support to the widows in his constituency, stressing that he has also been generous to the youth and under privileged.
“W are mothers, we don’t want Dino Melaye to be murdered. He is the umbrella we hide under each time we are distressed. We say no to this gun politics; with Dino we are well pleased,” Ikusomoro said.
The women, who later turned the protest march into a prayer session for Melaye, urged security agencies to fish out perpetrators of the act.
Responding, Melaiye expressed delight over the solidarity protest, noting that it would give him more encouragement to continue to speak the truth and fight for the masses.
