The Governing Council of the Lagos State University (LASU) has approved the dismissal of a senior lecturer, Dr. Rufai Raji Odutayo, from the services of the institution.
The decision was based on a report of a Joint Council/Senate Disciplinary Committee, on allegation of abscondment from duty.
A statement from LASU Centre for Information, Press and Public Relation (CIPPR), said the decision was taken by the institution’s governing council’s expedient meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, which considered the report of the disciplinary committee.
“The council considered the report of the Joint Council/Senate Disciplinary Committee on the allegation of abscondment from duty post and failure to serve the period of bond in the university levelled against Dr. Odutayo.
“Council, after extensive deliberation, approved the dismissal of Dr. Odutayo from the service of Lagos State University.’’
In a related development, the governing council has warned members staff who sought retroactive approval for training/study leave “when such staff had already embarked on full-time/part-time academic programmes without prior approval from the institution.”
The council alleged that such staff are made to fill the appropriate bond forms retroactively, in contravention of university regulations.
The council, in a statement, yesterday, said it frowned “at this practice and unanimously agreed that it should be discontinued thenceforth because it is alien to the provisions of the conditions of service for staff of the university.”
Thereafter, the governing council directed all staff (academic and non-academic) to seek the approval of the university before proceeding on any academic programme, either on full-time or part-time basis.
It warned, also, that retroactive approval for training/study leave would no longer be entertained from any staff (academic or non-academic).
“All staff (academic and non-academic) who have embarked on academic programmes without the prior approval of the university should forward a formal request, seeking for approval, to the office of the Registrar, not later than one month from the date of publication of the directives of council in the university bulletin;
“Any member of staff who flouts the provisions of the conditions of service as regards the issue at the expiration of the one month period would face appropriate disciplinary action(s),” the statement added.
